Sumatera earthquake kills 464: Social Department

The Jakarta Post  – The Social Department said on Thursday that as many as 464 people were killed while around 500 others were wounded after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake shook West Sumatera on Wednesday afternoon.

Tugiyo Bisri, spokesperson of the department’s crisis center, told CNN on Thursday that the worst hit area was in Padang where 376 residents died.

Miyabi can come, minister says

miyabiJakarta Post : As debate rages over the planned visit to Indonesia by Japanese porn star Maria “Miyabi” Ozawa, Communications and Information Minister Mohammad Nuh has said no one can stop her from coming to the country.

“As long as she doesn’t do any porn activity in Indonesia, then legally, [her visit] can’t be prohibited,” Nuh said recently in Kudus, Central Java, as reported by newsportal detik.com.

Quake rattles Venezuela

The Associated Press – An earthquake shook Venezuela’s capital and nearby states Saturday, injuring 14 people and causing damage to a few buildings.  The U.S. Geological Survey reported a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 for the quake, saying the epicenter was off Venezuela’s Caribbean coast 65 miles (110 kilometers) west of Caracas. The head of Venezuela’s seismological agency, Francisco Garces, put the quake at magnitude 6.2, followed by an aftershock registering 4.0.

Watchdogs skeptical of new BPK leadership

The Jakarta Post  – Corruption watchdogs expressed pessimism that the newly elected chairmen of the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) would be capable of improving the agency’s performance in monitoring state funds in the coming five years. The chairmen-elect would face difficulties maintaining the BPK as an independent body because of their unfamiliar faces, the watchdogs said.

Teen drug education also helps curb risky sexual behavior, study finds

School-based drug education programs for adolescents can have a long-term positive impact on sexual behavior in addition to curbing substance abuse, according to a new RAND Corporation study.

Researchers found that young adults who had been exposed to a popular drug abuse prevention program as adolescents were less likely to engage in risky sexual behavior five to seven years later, according to the findings published online by the Journal of Adolescent Health. The study provides the strongest evidence to date that drug abuse prevention programs can also curb risky sexual practices in young adulthood. (more…)
